The Story of Garforth Swimming Pool

When the Garforth Plan was being prepared Garforth residents were asked on five separate occasions over 10 years what they would like to see in Garforth. A swimming pool was strongly supported in every single survey. The strength of feeling was surprising but there is history to it. GNPF Newsletter for July 2026

Many of you will remember joining the GNPF several years ago and participated in the working groups and consultations which enabled us to finally produce a Neighbourhood Plan which was passed by the Examiner and voted for in 2024. The plan now has to be monitored to ensure that the policies within the plan are taken into account by the Leeds City Council (LCC )Planning Department and developers.

The Plan also identified several projects which could improve many of our Green Spaces and other facilities, however without legal power and finances this is unlikely to happen......more

Garforth Parks

We only have one park in Garforth – Barley Hill Park. There is no other land to build a new park on and because all nearby fields are prime building land to their owners, (which GNPF strongly opposes), there is little opportunity to easily acquire affordable land. What we do have is a number of playing fields. They act as parks in the summer but for the rest of the year they are too muddy to use for anybody but the local sports teams (if the land space is big enough to support a sports pitch).....more

Peckfield Mining Disaster

On the morning of Thursday, 30 April 1896, the small West Yorkshire village of Micklefield was shattered by a catastrophic underground explosion at Peckfield Colliery. The incident stands as the second-worst mining disaster in West Yorkshire’s history. It killed 63 men and boys alongside 19 pit ponies, fundamentally altering the community. The tragedy exposed the severe dangers of nineteenth-century coal mining and left a lasting legacy of grief, resilience, and commemoration.....more

After eight wonderful years, beginning as a small idea on Main Street with a few independent food and drink businesses, the Garforth Community Feastival team has been forced to hang up our t-shirts for the final time.....more

Parish Council Application

Garforth Neighbourhood Planning Forum have submitted an application to Leeds City Council for a Community Governance Review for the creation of a Parish Council in Garforth. The application will go to the LCC General Purposes Committee on 20th July

People’s Emergency Briefing

Eco-friendly Garforth are showing the film People’s Emergency Briefing at Garforth Welfare Hall on Saturday 26th September at 1.30pm followed by a 45-minute structured local discussion on what this means for our community, including implications for local preparedness, resilience and long-term planning.

Garforth Pendas Badminton Club

Do you want to play badminton? Club night at Garforth Pendas Badminton Club is on Mondays from 8pm to 10pm at Garforth Leisure Centre.

Garforth Fruit and Veg Show

The 44th Garforth Show takes place on Saturday 5th September at the Miners Welfare Hall. There are 34 classes of fruit and vegetables for entries.

Breeze in the Park

This year’s Breeze in the Park will take place at Glebelands in Garforth on 2nd August from noon to 4pm.

Church Cleaning Day

There will be a church cleaning morning on Saturday 18th July, 10am to 12noon at St Mary?s Garforth. Please do come along and help clean Church up if you can spare a few hours.

G-Fest

G-Fest returns to Glebelands in Garforth on Saturday 18th July from 11am to 10pm. Tickets from St Gemma?s on Main Street.

Sixth Form College

Plans are being brought forward for a brand new purpose built sixth form college at Thorpe Park, offering up to 1,000 places from Autumn 2028. It’s designed to give young people across East Leeds more choice and better opportunities close to home. It won’t just offer A Levels, there will also be technical and vocational routes, including T Levels, so there is something for every young person, whatever career path they are thinking about.
